Blood Drive, 12/17
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BECOMING A MEMBER:
ELIGIBILITY:
1. Only Juniors and Seniors are eligible for selection
into the National Honor Society.
2. Students must have a cumulative, weighted GPA of 3.5.
3. Students meeting the previous two requirements will be sent a letter
from Ms. Graney
in the summer inviting them to apply for membership to the West chapter.
4. Students previously dismissed from the NHS are not eligible to apply
again.
SELECTION PROCESS:
1. A Faculty Committee selects all members of the National
Honor Society. Ms. Graney
acts as an advisor to the students. She is not a member of the Selection
Committee.
2. Student applications are evaluated for the following 4 criteria
required of National
Honor Society members: scholarship, leadership, service, & character.
3. To be accepted into the West chapter of the NHS, students are expected
to have
service to school, service to community, leadership, and good character.
*Service to school is defined as having an ongoing commitment
to West clubs,
organizations, and/or sports. It is expected that students participate in
school service
activities on a weekly basis.
*Service to community is defined as activities that are done
for or on behalf of others
(outside of family & school) for which no compensation has been given. For
2008 applicants, juniors will be expected to have performed 10 hours, and
seniors 15 hrs.
*Leadership positions should be elected or appointed, and
require students to be
directly responsible for leading and motivating others. Examples of
acceptable leadership
positions are class/club officer, work manager, and newspaper editor, to name a
few.
*Good character is defined as having no record of cheating,
intentional dishonesty,
violations of school rules, or civil offenses in the community.
4. Students are required to get letters or signed evaluation forms for all
activities in and
out of school.
5. There is a solid deadline for completed NHS applications. Any
application, letter, or form
received after this date will not be accepted. There are no exceptions to
this rule.
6. Applications are examined by the Faculty Selection Committee and all
applicants will
receive a letter in the mail announcing the Committee's decision. Letters
are usually mailed
out within 3-4 weeks after the applications are submitted.
7. Induction is held shortly after the letters go home, usually in October
or November. See
District Calendar for exact date.
8. For an example of the application, students/parents may contact Ms.
Graney. During application
season (July-Sept), the application and FAQ's will be posted freely on this website for student
applicants to download. Click
HERE to access the
downloadable application and forms.
MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS:
Membership in the C.B. West National Honor Society is both an
honor and a commitment
to the demonstration of scholarship, service, leadership, & character.
Maintaining one's
membership is dependent upon the continuous demonstration of these qualities
that earned
each member's selection.
Please note that all members will:
*Maintain a 3.5 weighted, cumulative G.P.A.
*Attend all meetings, or pick up the minutes within two days
for equivalent credit*.
*Participate in a minimum of three West N.H.S.-sponsored
projects or activities.
*Adhere to all Central Bucks rules & policies.
In the event that a member fails to comply with any of these requirements, the
West Faculty
Selection Committee will review his or her membership status with the intent to
dismiss. If a Junior
fails to meet
these requirements, he or she may be required to relinquish membership and will
not be able
to reapply. Any Senior who fails to meet these requirements may be
required to relinquish
membership and will not be honored as a NHS member at the graduation ceremony.
Students whose GPA falls below the required 3.5 will have one
marking period in which to
raise his/her grades to be in compliance. Juniors and seniors whose GPA
remains below the minimum for two consecutive marking periods will be dismissed
from NHS. Seniors whose GPA is not above a 3.5 at the 3rd marking period
report card will not be recognized at Graduation. Additionally, the
Faculty Selection Committee will be asked to review his or her membership
status.
*Note: all meetings are mandatory. Other club meetings
and/or sports do not take precedence over NHS meetings. Expect that
meetings will last 30 minutes. There are no early sign-ups for
activities. You must attend the meetings in order to sign up for
activities. Additionally, it is a member's responsibility to see Ms. Graney within two days for the minutes and
provide a valid excuse for missing the meeting. At that time, members will
receive credit for the meeting.
