A Letter to incoming Sophomores

Dear Graduating Class of 2008,

My name is D. Butterworth, I am a senior at West and the choir president for this school year (2004-2005). As an old chapter in your education is quickly coming to an end, you find yourselves eagerly preparing for your transition into CB West next school year. High school is a great opportunity to encounter some new faces and explore newfound interest; and I am writing to make sure that you aren't going to miss out on what I consider to have been the more influential activity in my high school career. This activity is, of course, is choir and whether you are a middle school veteran or a first time singer there are innumerable opportunities and levels of involvement. A huge percentage of CB West students are enrolled in the standard choir class, which allows you to travel on the annual trip in the spring and audition for any of the four select ensembles. Your level of involvement as I mentioned before is ultimately up to you, but the more you invest in the program the more you get out of it. The Chamber Choir has a performance schedule that is unrivaled in the high school choral community, and performs at some of the most important venues on the East Coast. It is also important for you to know that being a participant in school sports is not a reason to forgo enrolling in the choir program, about half of all select ensemble members balance the two after school activities with ease.

Choir is much more that just notes on a page, it’s a community, bound but fellowship and collected under the common goal of creating extraordinary opportunities through musical expression. My experiences in high school choir have influenced me immensely and are at the heart of my fondest high school memories. Choir has something to offer everyone, make sure that you don't miss out on all the great opportunities.
