In
Honor of
1999 CB East graduate Colby Umbrell First Lieutenant United States Army
First Lieutenant Colby Umbrell, 1999 Central Bucks East Graduate died in service to our country in Musayyib, Iraq on Thursday, May 3, 2007.
Lieutenant Umbrell's football coach, Mr. Larry Greene said "Colby was a captain of the football team who exhibited great leadership characteristics. He worked very hard to make himself, the team, and his teammates better. He was highly respected by his coaches and teammates and more importantly, he was a young man of great character and the highest integrity." One of Lieutenant Umbrell's many accomplishments as a football player was his participation on the 1999 Bucks County Lions North All Star Team.
Central Bucks East staff, led by Ginny Kownurko, petitioned Governer Ed Rendell to lower our flag to half mast in honor of Colby. Ms. Kownurko writes, "Thank you so much to all who spent the time and requested Governor Rendell to allow us to lower the flag in honor of Colby Umbrell's service to our country. A special thank you to Rich Scott and Bernie O'Neill and his office staff for giving the 'big push.' The overwhelming response from all of you and those that you passed the message on to caused the Governor's office to contact the district and request that our flag be lowered. It is currently standing at half staff."
Mr. Paul Wilson, track coach at East, said that what Colby brought to the team was "enthusiasm, energy and willpower. As I remember, Colby was a boy who refused to acknowledge that he had any limitations. He believed that he could accomplish anything as long as he worked at it. For Colby, I think that this attitude worked because he had the mental and physical abilities that allowed him to accomplish most things that he wanted to.Colby had the perfect attitude (mentally and physically) to be a leader in the military. He embodied the spirit and ethic that a leader of men would need."
After graduating from East, Lieutenant Umbrell attended Johns Hopkins University, where he continued his excellence as a student and athlete, to include studying in Italy and running several marathons.
