Students planning to major in art are encouraged to incorporate a variety of courses into their curriculum planning.
The emphasis is on skills and the thinking and planning processes which develop works of art. There are four 18 week sequential levels; Art 1, Art 2, Art 3 and Art 4. Each curriculum follows the state and national standards with DBAE based outcomes and includes oral, written and performance based assessments. The philosophy of the program is art for all students, relating art to life and community issues.
This course is open to all students in grades 9-12 who are interested in beginning an advanced exploratory study of art. Knowledge, skills, and techniques learned in grades k - 8 serve as a starting point for students to develop and refine their ability to control various two and three dimension media. Students will have introductory and developmental experience in drawing, sculpture, mixed media, painting, and three- dimensional design. This course meets in a 90 minute block for 18 weeks in grades 10-12 and in a 45 minute class period everyday for the year in grade 9. It is worth 1.0 credits.
Students in grades 10 - 12 who elect this course will continue to refine skills through more advanced study of media and processes involved in figure drawing, portrait, painting, printing, along with art history, criticism and philosophy and advanced study of space usage and the thought processes and steps involved in creating an artwork. This course meets in a 90 minute block for 18 weeks in grades 10-12. It is worth 1.0 credits.
In this course, there will be a further development of skills and knowledge in life drawing, landscape drawing, watercolor and acrylic painting, additive and subtractive sculpture, advanced printmaking processes (e.g. serigraphy, etching, lithography,) along with art related careers, art history, criticism, philosophy. Any student considering post-high school study and / or work in any related art field is encouraged to take this course. This course meets in a 90 minute block for 18 weeks in grades 10-12. It is worth 1.0 credits.
This course is intended for students who are seeking to develop a more sophisticated and refined style for their artwork, or for those students who wish to prepare portfolios for college or employment interviews. Students will study portfolio development and interviewing processes and techniques as well as develop individual creative solutions to problems involving advanced drawing skills, spatial design, mixed media, painting, graphics, and sculpture. Art history, criticism, and philosophy will be integrated into all units. This course meets in a 90 minute block for 18 weeks in grades 10-12. It is worth 1.0 credits.
